Cooma, a decent town perfect for family vacation and tours, is located in the southern part of New South Wales. It is the main town of Monaro with an elevation of 800 m above sea level. Its name is said to have originated from the Aboriginal word “Coombah” which means “open country” or “big lake”. When passing by the Monaro Highway, the town is 115 km south of Canberra, the country’s capital. Crossing Cooma is the Snowy Mountains Highway which connects Bega and Riverina.
Cooma started its taste of rapid growth and development when it was made as the main center of the Snowy Mountains Scheme in 1949. Its tourism industry significantly developed when it became as the major travelers’ stop to the famous New South Wales snow fields on winter and was then called as the “Gateway to the Snowy Mountains”.
